Tooth Extractions
Gilbert, AZ

Tooth extractions refer to the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. This procedure is usually performed by a dentist or an oral surgeon. Relatively quick, the procedure is done with local, general, intravenous anesthesia. This is so the patient can be comfortable and pain free during the procedure.

A simple extraction is when the teeth are visible that need to be removed. For those teeth which are broken off, beneath the surface, or impacted, they require a more involved procedure known as a complex extraction. Patients experience tooth pain should come see us at San Tan Oral Surgery and allow or staff to evaluation their oral care needs. If a tooth extraction is necessary our team can schedule your appointment today and have the tooth diagnosed, and if necessary, removed.

Why do I need and extraction?

Our team will inform patients about each step involved so they can prepare themselves for the procedure. A dental analysis of the tooth and surrounding tissue is completed to assess the situation to determine the type of oral procedure to be used in the removal and if anesthesia will be necessary.

There are a number of reasons a tooth extraction is necessary. When cavities have progressed too far to be properly treated with a crown or a filling the tooth typically has to be removed. Gum disease and dental infections can also warrant the removal of one or more teeth. Other reasons for an extraction can include trauma to the tooth or surrounding soft tissue, wisdom teeth complications, dental prosthesis preparations, orthodontic preparation for braces and when primary teeth are complicating the eruption of adult teeth.

After a tooth extraction

It is important for patients to avoid smoking and drinking anything through a straw as the sucking motion can loosen the surgical area and delay healing. Patients should realize it takes time to heal from a surgical procedure and what they do impacts how long recovery takes. Patients should consider soft foods and liquids as nourishment during this time. These include soups, smoothies, mashed potatoes, yogurts, milkshakes, and ice cream. Cold liquids are recommended to help any post-op swelling around the surgery site. Patients should not eat spicy foods and should not drink hot drinks or sodas of any kind.

Are There Any Side Effects?

While tooth extractions are a common dental procedure, having third molars, or wisdom teeth as they are called, removed is a little more involved. While those having any of their front four teeth removed will have little side effects, those having their wisdom teeth extracted may experience nausea, pain, and minor bleeding.

Typically, we ask our patients to take it easy for the first 48 to 72 hours to allow clotting in the treatment area. Once the first few days have passed, patients can return to their normal activities without any restrictions. The soft tissue around the extraction site takes approximately three to four weeks to heal completely.

Patients who notice loose or discolored teeth during the course of their brushing and flossing should contact us at San Tan Oral Surgery to see if a tooth extraction is necessary. Feel free to call (480) 604-2592 for an assessment so our staff can determine the best treatment option.
