Child sticking out her tongue after frenectomy at San Tan Oral Surgery in Gilbert, AZHaving a frenectomy refers to a simple surgical procedure that removes a frenulum from a part of the body. The frenulum is a soft fold of skin that acts as a connection that keeps an organ in the body from moving too far. In the oral arena, a frenectomy involves the flap of skin underneath the tongue or in between the gums and upper lip. If you are having any of the issues associated with a frenectomy or think that you may need a frenectomy, our friendly and knowledgeable team here at San Tan Oral Surgery can help you.

Who May Need A Frenectomy?

Frenectomies are a very common procedure in children and adults alike. Many babies are given a frenectomy if it is determined that the frenulum may be interfering with breastfeeding. This issue is commonly referred to as a “tongue tie,” and it can also cause speech issues in children. Sometimes this issue is not discovered until the child goes to school and is able to notice a speech impediment.

If the frenulum between the upper lip and gums is not formed correctly, this has the potential to cause issues with tooth and speech development. It may make it more difficult to clean certain areas of your teeth, which may lead to easier instances of gum disease. This issue is sometimes not noticed until adulthood, when the adult teeth begin to gap.

What is the Procedure for a Frenectomy?

The process for a frenectomy is usually quite short. It will start with an evaluation by us to determine the extent of your problem. If you are a good candidate for a frenectomy, your appointment will be scheduled. Depending on the type and other details of the frenectomy needed, we will choose to use a standard scalpel or other technology such as a type of laser surgery to remove the frenulum.

The procedure as a whole normally takes no longer than 10 to 15 minutes overall, and the patient is given aftercare instructions that normally include keeping the muscles of the mouth still and keeping the area of the surgery as clean as possible. The surgery site may or may not require stitches, and you will likely have a follow up appointment within a couple weeks with us to assure that the surgical site is healing properly.

Frenectomies have become very commonplace, in-office procedures. They are normally quick, and the recovery is usually fast and simple and easy to maintain. There is a very small chance of risk with this type of surgery, and healing should begin almost immediately after the process. Generally, there are very few complications.
